早期臺灣原住民常以葫蘆、竹子或椰子等天然材料
運用其原有的外形與中空的特性
製作成各種形式的汲水與儲水容器
竹子內部的竹節打通後可做成提水竹筒
葫蘆和椰子除了在頂部切出蓋子後可做成瓢壺、椰殼壺等容器之外
也能經由剖削製成瓢勺、椰殼勺(匙)一類的飲食器具
本件鄒族水瓢是以葫蘆製成的盛水容器
瓢勺製作過程為摘取熟成的葫蘆
在下方較大的圓形果實部位剖切出開口
將內部的瓜瓤與瓜籽刮除乾淨後進行曬乾
由於乾燥後的葫蘆表皮木質化
製成的瓢勺具有不易透水、質地堅硬與重量輕的特性
且帶有握柄方便握持使用
是常見的一種匏製容器
